HOWS is a community service project sheltering outside dogs in need in Charlottesville and surrounding counties.

Confirmed Case of Leptospirosis 9/4/2010

A pet dog with signs of muscle and joint pain, loss of appetite, and elevated kidney tests in Earlysville was diagnosed with Leptospirosis. After a couple of days in the hospital she is home and doing well on antibiotics.

Rabies in local wildlife news from  Albemarle County Animal Control Officer and LVT, Kim Maddox: "We have had positive cases of rabies in the Albemarle County....an increase of 67% this year from last.  I had two fox that came back positive...one from the Pantops area and one from Gilbert Station area.  This year Louisa Co had a deer come back positive." 

Canine Influenza: Has anyone seen a case in our area yet? Have you tested any dogs? Earlysville Animal Hospital has tested two dogs and both were negative.
